What is MLV?

MLV is a dense, flexible soundproofing material typically manufactured in thin rolls or sheets. It is made from a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and heavy mineral fillers, which give it both mass and flexibility. 

Unlike rigid soundproofing panels, MLV can be easily bent, cut, and applied to different surfaces without losing its sound-blocking qualities.

How does MLV work?

The effectiveness of MLV lies in its ability to block airborne sound waves by adding mass to structures. 

Sound travels through vibrations, and lightweight materials like drywall or wood can easily vibrate, allowing sound to pass through. By adding a dense layer of MLV, those vibrations are dampened, reducing the transmission of sound.

In acoustic terms, MLV works on the principle of the mass law: the more mass a barrier has, the more sound it can block. 

MLV is particularly effective at reducing mid- to high-frequency sounds, such as voices, TV noise, and traffic sounds.

Despite being thin, MLV is heavy (approximately 1 pound per square foot at 1/8-inch thickness). This makes large installations labor-intensive.

How to install MLV

👉 Measure the surface area where MLV will be installed.

👉 Cut the sheets to size using a sharp utility knife.

👉 Ensure the surface is clean and free from dust or grease.

Step 2: Installation Options

  • Direct attachment

Use nails, screws, or industrial staples to attach MLV directly to walls or ceilings.

  • Adhesive mounting

For smooth surfaces, construction adhesive or spray adhesive can be used.

  • Layering between drywall

Sandwich MLV between two layers of drywall for maximum effectiveness.

  • Floating floor installation

Lay MLV under flooring materials (carpet, laminate, or hardwood) to reduce impact and airborne noise.

  • Door and window treatments

Attach smaller sheets of MLV to doors or window plugs for targeted soundproofing.

Step 3: Sealing

👉 Seal all seams and edges with acoustic caulk or specialized tape to prevent sound leakage.
